Narrative Therapy - With Mental Peaks Therapy

As noted by the American Psychological Association, Narrative therapy focuses on the client’s understanding of his or her own story and how the client’s emotions, actions, and problems fit into the context of the story. This approach seeks to reach one of three goals: to put “untold” aspects of the client’s past into the life narrative, help clients emotionally enter and reauthor their own stories, or help clients construct new meanings in relation to stories that may emerge in therapy. This form of therapy was developed in the 1980s by Michael White and David Epston and according to positive psychology.com, “Narrative therapy is a form of therapy that aims to separate the individual from the problem, allowing the individual to externalize their issues rather than internalize them” At Mental Peaks Therapy, we help our clients to find their voice and tell their story in their words without judgement. This helps the client in finding meaning and purpose in their own experience which is followed by application of the externalization technique. During this phase, we help our clients view their problems as external instead of an unchangeable part of themselves; deconstruing of the problem in the story and then re-narrating the story to create unique and a life-affirming outcomes follows.
